You formed me in my mother’s womb
By your grace I've been made new
You're teaching me to follow you and live in such a way
That I may glorify you, glorify you
You're teaching me to follow you and live in such a way
That I may glorify you, glorify you

You're forming us into your church
Empowering us for your work
Equipping us to worship you, to live in such a way
That we may glorify you, glorify you
Equipping us to worship you, to live in such a way
That we may glorify you, glorify you

So let it be, amen
So let it be, amen
Let us learn to worship you in Spirit and in truth
That we may glorify you, glorify you
That we may glorify you, glorify you

You're sending us into the world
To live and breathe and spread your Word
Calling us to demonstrate love, mercy and grace
That we may glorify you, glorify you
Teaching us to follow you
Equipping us to worship you
Calling us to demonstrate love, mercy and grace
That we may glorify you

Psalm 139:13, 2 Cor 5:17, Rom 12:1-2, Eph 4:11-16, John 4:23-24, Matt 28:19-20, John 13:34-35

This song was written while I was planning worship for a worship series at Liberty United Methodist Church entitled “Waking To God's Dream." A couple of the sermons in that series related to discipleship and how the church ought to function. I found myself searching for a song that could both give praise for God's guiding Spirit and meditate on the journey of discipleship that God is calling us to as both individuals and as a church.

As often happens in moments like this, I found myself having trouble finding the song that would scratch the itch. At some point, I picked up a guitar, not with an intention to write as much as with the intention of relaxing my mind and taking a break from my computer screen and song books.

The first thing I played was the opening riff of what would become “That We May Glorify You." After playing that riff a few times, I started to sing “You formed me in my mother's womb and by your grace I've been made new.” OK! Something was happening, so I pulled on that thread a bit more until I had a verse about my creation, my redemption, and God guiding me toward living a worshipful life.

Over the course of an hour, likely not even that long, verses about God forming us into an equipped and empowered church that would be sent out into the world to demonstrate love, mercy and grace were written.

The focal point of the song is the bridge, which quotes John 4. What is it to worship in Spirit and in truth? What does that mean? I have been asking that question for over 20 years. I have a whole lot I could write about it and yet at the same time, I feel like I'm just starting to learn.
