Phil 4:4-7
In late August 2021, I had been serving a church in Louisiana for just over a year and it was not going well. For most of that time, my family had stayed in Kansas where my wife, Renelle, was pastoring a church and our kids were in virtual-learning-mode during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the difficulty I had during that year I chalked up to being away from my family and living in a new place that was almost completely closed down. It was hard to tell if the difficulties I was having really had that much to do with work or if it was more about my family being half-a-country away.
My family finally moved down in July and Renelle joined the staff of the church where I was working. Soon, we came to realize the conflicts I was dealing with at work were getting worse, not better.
Then, Hurricane Ida hit. Mandatory evacuation. We accepted an invitation to get away to a lake house outside of Austin, TX. The journey took a very long time (the traffic created when a major metro area evacuates all at once is something else) and we got in a car crash just before getting to our destination that took our vehicle out of commission.
For days, we didn’t know what had come of our house and everything we owned, our new church, our new friends, our new neighbors. On top of that, I was coming to terms with the idea that the job I had turned my family’s life upside down for was not working out and now the dang car was in the shop!
I was mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically overwhelmed AND there was the possibility that so was our house.
I sat on the deck of that lake house and wrote “I Am Overwhelmed” as well as “So Be It,” which is an adaptation of John Wesley’s Covenant Prayer. Within weeks, I would quit my job and embark, in faith, on a whole new tough season. When so many things were telling me to quit pursuing my calling as a worship leader and songwriter, these songs helped me stay connected to God’s Spirit and keep going.
