Let my life be a sacrifice to you
Let me count it all as loss for the gain of knowing you
Show me how to worship in spirit and in truth
Let my life be a sacrifice to you
Let my life be a sacrifice to you
Simply set apart for your Spirit to work through
No longer my own, now I belong to you
Let my life be a sacrifice to you
Help me live it out
Oh, help me live it out
Mmm, help me live it out
Oh, help me live it out
Let my life be a sacrifice to you
Help me carry others' burdens so they can follow too
May I become all things that I might reach a few
Let my life be a sacrifice to you
Help me live it out
Oh, help me live it out
Mmm, help me live it out
Oh, help me live it out
Let my life be a sacrifice to you
Let me do today the things you would lead me to
Show me what it means to truly live for you
Let my life be a sacrifice to you
Let my life be a sacrifice to you
Let my life be a sacrifice to you

I believed upon writing this song, and now almost six years later still believe, that this is likely the most important song I have ever written or will ever write. If anything I’ve done becomes a part of the great songbook of the faith, this should be it (not that I have any say in the matter whatsoever).
The anchor scripture for it is Romans 12:1, where Paul tells us (to paraphrase) that our true worship is in how we live our lives sacrificially for God and for others. It has nothing to do with what we do in a church service. You can sing loudly, pray fervently, and take excellent sermon notes on Sunday but if you walk out the door to live a self-centered life that looks just like the world (see Romans 12:2), then it’s all for nothing.
As I worship leader, I hope that our worship services will work like getting your car “serviced.” I hope that what we do when we gather with song, scripture, prayer, preaching and fellowship heartens us to walk out the door and live lives of actual worship. I spend a lot of time (some have suggested maybe too much) slowly, prayerfully considering what songs we should sing together every Sunday, and even how we should sing them, so that we might all connect to God and each other through these songs of prayer, meditation, exhortation, admonishment and more. I hope and pray that what we do on Sunday morning helps you go do the real stuff the rest of the week.
