Help us love the ones the world says we should hate
May your bold compassion move and motivate
So we’ll reach out to those we’re fearful to embrace
And extend your love today

May your bold compassion move and motivate
So we’ll reach out to those we’re fearful to embrace
And extend your love today
And extend your love today
Help us extend your love today

Luke 10:25-37

Written in August of 2024 while attending The Wesleyan Songwriters Summit in a small town outside of Chicago. I was already in the middle of planning the services for the “Engrave It On Your Heart” worship series when we were challenged to write something new at this event.

I usually do not write songs “on purpose,” meaning I do not sit down with the intention to write something. Songs typically interrupt my day. I find when I try to write I am rarely pleased with the results and almost never feel like the Holy Spirit was part of the process. I’ve done my best to discipline myself against this kind of songwriting and to only engage in the writing process when a song begins to flow into my mind/spirit. When we were challenged to write on the spot, I initially rolled my eyes and began to wonder if taking the trip to this event was going to be a waste of time.

I was surprised when I got up to get a fresh cup of coffee and began to hear a little tune with the first lines of a lyric. “Help Us Love the Ones” is another short little song of prayer, fit for this era where we find ourselves sharply divided about a great many things, if not everything. We can turn to nearly any source of media and find messaging telling us how terrible the other side is and how we ought to be against them. This thinking has even found its way into many corners of the church. Much of modern day Christianity in the USA is engaged in an ill-advised culture war that causes harm to our neighbors and hardens their hearts against the Gospel. God, have mercy on us and help us out of this mess.
