I wrote the song “Let It Be Written On My Heart” in early September 2024 while we were in the midst of a worship series titled “Engrave It On Your Heart,” which was centered on the teachings of Jesus that used the Shema. It made its debut in a worship service on September 15, 2024.
This is a simple song of prayer asking for help loving God and neighbor, with each verse focused on an aspect of Jesus’ teachings (heart, soul, mind, strength and neighbor). The music is simple and repetitive by design in hopes it can help us meditate, prayerfully, on the lyric. It also feels a little bit like Bob Dylan’s “Knocking On Heaven’s Door” or early Maranatha! praise songs, which are a source I have returned to quite a bit in my time at Liberty UMC.
