I don't know how to love you like I should
I don't know how to love you like I should
I don't know how to love you like I should
Draw my heart to you, O God
I don't know how to follow like I should
I don't know how to follow like I should
I don't know how to follow like I should
Give me eyes to see, O God
Renew my mind, may it be set upon you
Renew my mind, may it be set upon you
I don't know how to listen like I should
I don't know how to listen like I should
I don't know how to listen like I should
Give me ears to hear, O God
Renew my mind, may it be set upon you
Renew my mind, may it be set upon you
Help me leave the ways of the world behind
And trust you to be my guide
Oh, help me to not be conformed to the pattern of the world
But be transformed by a renewed mind
Help me leave the ways of the world behind
And trust you to be my guide
Oh, help me to not be conformed to the pattern of the world
But be transformed by a renewed mind
I don't know how to live the way I should
I don't know how to live the way I should
I don't know how to live the way I should
Help me live for you, O God
Help me live for you, O God
Help me live for you, O God

Rom 12:2
The further down this road of faith I get, the more I feel Paul's best two lines can both be found at the beginning of Romans 12. For my reflections on verse one, see “Let My Life Be A Sacrifice.” The second verse is what inspired this simple song of prayer.
I think a lot about what it means to not be conformed to the pattern of this world. I look around my life and the lives of those I'm connected to and I see a lot of us living pretty normal lives; lives of jobs and rent (or mortgages) and kids and school and bills and retirement funds and car payments and 5 year plans, etc, etc. It seems to me we tend to think of this verse about meaning avoiding worldly sinfulness, but I think the Christian life is supposed to be counter-cultural. Following God should maybe look a little strange. Jesus said that people who follow the Spirit will be like the wind - you don't know where they're coming from or where they're going (John 3:8).
In Romans 12:1, Paul explains that our real worship is about living as a sacrifice for God and then he tells us not to be conformed to the pattern of the world, because the pattern of the world is not about sacrifice. The pattern of the world is about obtaining and maintaining wealth and comfort. The pattern of the world is self-sufficiency. The pattern of the world is practical and safe. The way of Jesus, however, requires picking up your cross to follow him. The way of Jesus requires relying on God's provisions and not your own. The way of Jesus looks impractical and risky.
I want to leave the ways of the world behind and trust God. I want to not be conformed to the pattern of the world, but transformed by a renewed mind. That doesn't happen just once, at least not for me. To keep walking down this road of faith, I must return again and again to have my mind renewed. The world is full of voices and influences inviting me, pressuring me, goading me to conform.
I'd rather be like the wind.
