A classic song of the faith and of the season with text written by Charles Wesley and tune by Rowland Hugh Prichard.

Charles Wesley, the prolific hymn-writer and brother to John, is considered to be perhaps the greatest songwriter of the faith, though only a small portion of his songs (he is credited to have penned well over six thousand) are well-known today.

The lyrics to this song do a great job of reaching across time - we can sing it and think of the time and place of Jesus’ birth while at the same time we can earnestly pray these words freshly in our own context. Every Advent, the words that stick with me the most are “By thine own eternal Spirit, rule in all our hearts alone.” Jesus is Immanuel, and because of the gift of The Holy Spirit today, God is ever with us even now. Have we truly given ourselves over to him so that he may rule in our hearts alone? Advent is a perfect time to reflect on that and pray that God would help us live into it more fully.
