Not my will, but thine, dear Lord
Take my heart and make it yours
And refine, like gold
The desires of my soul
Oh I pray, dear Lord
Take my heart and make it yours
Please help me lay down all my self-serving thoughts
So I can follow after you
Please help me to consider not the cost
But focus only on your call
Not my will, but thine, dear Lord
Take my heart and make it yours
And refine, like gold
The desires of my soul
Oh I pray, dear Lord
Take my heart and make it yours
Please help me lay down my worries and fears
So I can simply trust in you
Please help me to be one who sees and hears
To worship in Spirit and in truth
Not my will, but thine, dear Lord
Take my heart and make it yours
And refine, like gold
The desires of my soul
Oh I pray, dear Lord
Take my heart and make it yours
Not my will, but thine, dear Lord
Take my heart and make it yours
And refine, like gold
The desires of my soul
Oh I pray, dear Lord
Take my heart and make it yours

Discipleship, following Jesus, is costly. It is meant to be. Jesus is clear about this in Luke 14:25-33 and he gave us perhaps the greatest example of weighing the cost of walking with God in his prayer from the Garden of Gethsemane “Not my will, but thine.”
These are the things I was thinking about sitting in my office at Wamego United Methodist Church one day in August of 2019; the cost of my calling and the things that might prevent me from following - self serving thoughts, worries and fears. Of course I don't want to have hardship. I don't want to suffer. I don't want to experience many of the things obedience brings and many of the things I do want are not what God would have for me. I need my desires to be refined and for my heart - the very center of my innermost being - to be fully about God.
