I am yours and not my own
Guide me where I need to go
Give me your work, give me your strength
Give me your rest and your relief
Take me high or take me low
I am yours and not my own

Oh, Glorious God
Father, Son and Holy Spirit
I am yours and you are mine
So be it, so be it

I am yours and not my own
If I have much or I have none
I will give you everything
And trust in you for all I need
Let me live for you alone
I am yours and not my own

Oh, Glorious God
Father, Son and Holy Spirit
I am yours and you are mine
So be it, so be it

Oh, Glorious God
Father, Son and Holy Spirit
I am yours and you are mine
So be it, so be it

Let this covenant I've made on earth
Be made in Heaven
So be it, so be it

Let this covenant I've made on earth
Be made in Heaven
So be it, so be it

I am yours and not my own
I am yours and not my own
I am yours and not my own
I am yours and not my own

Based on/paraphrase of the Wesley Covenant Prayer.

“So Be It” was written on the back deck of a lakehouse just outside of Austin, TX. For more on why I happened to be there, you can read the story I posted for “I Am Overwhelmed.

As I sat on that deck, feeling all the feelings, I felt a longing to reaffirm my discipleship, to reaffirm my acceptance of the New Covenant, to freshly dedicate myself to serving God however, wherever, whenever.

I remembered a conversation I had with my friend Richie back in Wamego, KS one evening. He and I were both out on a walk and our paths intersected downtown. We stopped to talk for a while and he shared with me how impactful the Wesley Covenant Prayer had been for him. Pastor Michael Tomson-DeGreeff had suggested Richie spend time with it for a season and it had an effect.

In Wesleyan circles, and particularly in the United Methodist Church, John Wesley's traditional prayer looms large, often used along with baptisms or in annual covenant-renewal services (you can find the full text of the prayer below).

I looked up the prayer afresh, spent some time with it myself, and was moved to put it to my own musical setting, adapting the “O glorious and blessed God" section for my chorus and the closing line as the bridge, trimming a few words out and updating the language.

In the years since, I have gotten to use the song a fair amount, but Wamego United Methodist Church, under the leadership of Molly Scriven, has likely used it much more than I have, even though I wrote it over a year after I had moved on from working there.

“I am no longer my own, but thine.
Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee,
exalted for thee or brought low for thee.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things
to thy pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.”
